2022 was a pivotal year for Indigenous Photograph — we continued to grow our global community through our international expansion and launched the second Indigenous Photograph Project Grant in collaboration with Photoville and Leica. Now more than ever, we need Indigenous peoples telling our own story and being in charge of our narratives. Portrait of Quannah Rose Chasinghorse-Potts, in front of sacred Indigenous land near her childhood home on the Navajo Nation. The landform is known as West Mitten, in Monument Valley, Utah. Set aside in 1958, it is a Navajo Nation tribal park, considered sacred by Diné and managed by the nation. Self-management of lands sacred to Indigenous peoples is one major aspect of the Native American landback movement.

The town I live in is known for being the home of the paniolo (cowboy), with a ranch being the center of our town. A big part of our town and our island of Hawaiʻi in general is rodeos. For some people it is their everyday way of life, something that is generational and is part of your mindset. Seeing the younger generations being actively present at the rodeos and in a paniolo lifestyle makes me hopeful that this way of life will continue on for many generations to come.

Ceremonial wrist tying and blessings take place in Patterson Park; Akron; Ohio during Martyr Day; which commemorates the death of Saw Ba U Gyi; the first president of the Ka'Ren National Union. For the Ka'Ren American community members who are Christian; these more traditional and folkloric traditions inhabit a cultural space outside; but interconnected to their dogma. As one of the sole cultural community events in the year; the day has several parts starting with speeches and historical lessons in the morning and concluding with an award ceremony with cash awards and trophies for the sports tournaments that take place.

Pictured here is David Maruariki, a local Rarotongan carver and artist working with Master Carver Mike Tavioni, on building a traditional fishing canoe/vaka. David has been carving traditional artifacts and wood carvings since he was a young boy and learnt from Elder Mike Tavioni. This image was taken in September 2022, during a project called Te Mana O te Vaka in Rarotonga, Cook Islands. He uses a chainsaw to cut and shape the tree logs into a canoe.
The significance of this project is about the revival of an ancestral practice and a way of life for many Polynesian communities. The traditional fishing canoe was built to enable our people to provide small and large fish to feed their communities and families.

The Hausa people of northern Nigeria have their own Indigenous fighting style known as Dambe. Typically, throughout a match, each fighter tries to throw their opponent to the ground in order to completely overpower them.

On 3 March 2022, Susan Oboh, a final-year student at the University of Benin, passed away after being shot by armed robbers. Oboh was seeing off a visitor in the Osasogie area, a community close to the university gate. On 7 March, the student community gathered for a candlelight procession to honor her. The issue of insecurity remains a concern for Nigeria. Besides the Boko Haram terrorist group, armed gangs, kidnappers, community clashes and separatist groups have exacerbated the insecurity situation in the country. The 2021 Global Peace Index produced by the Institute for Economics & Peace has ranked Nigeria 146 among 163 independent nations and territories according to its level of peacefulness.
